Turn Passion Into Profit with Ali Raymer | Travel Advisor | Growth Strategy Podcast

I joined Alyssa Nolte on The Growth Signal with a hot take that surprised even me as I said it out loud: most of what you're doing in your business, you should probably stop doing.

Why do I think doing less is the key to growing a business?

I hit a real choke point where everything I did was funneling straight through me. I finally had to admit I'm not that special, and started tapping people on the shoulder to join the mission instead of holding onto everything myself.

What was my actual struggle with delegation?

It wasn't trust. I didn't want anyone else on my team to feel the stress and overwhelm I was carrying, so I kept taking things off their plate. A teammate eventually told me that made her feel like I didn't want her to grow, and that completely flipped how I think about building a team.

How did I find my first hires?

Organically. My first was a former student who became my Disney expert. From there I brought on two former clients as specialists, one in luxury ski, one in Hawaii, plus another former student as my assistant, since she loved the industry but didn't want to grow into sales.

Does passion for travel have to come before sales skills, or can you teach it?

I genuinely believe passion has to come first. I can teach someone the nuances of selling travel, but I can't teach lived experience, like a teammate who spent six years living in Spain. That kind of background can't be mentored into someone.

What's the real value a travel advisor provides?

Listening between the lines. Clients often think they want one thing, Lake Como, Santorini, five days of Broadway shows, but what they're actually describing doesn't match what will make them happy. Zooming out and redirecting them toward what actually fits their style is where the real value lives.
