When Is the Best Time to Book a Vacation? A Month-by-Month Guide

Recently I've had a few last-minute vacation requests. Clients have reached out to travel within the next month or so, or even the next few days. It can be a frustrating experience, both for myself and for the client, because prices are so high right now and availability is so limited.

So let's look at the ideal time to book travel, so you're not left facing the same frustrations some of my clients have felt recently: booking last-minute trips with exorbitant price tags, or deciding not to take the trip at all because of high prices and limited availability.

When should I book my summer vacation?

If it's June, July, or August, you should be booking your spring break trip for the following year. During your current summer vacation, start planning your next spring break. Whether it's a tropical getaway or a trip to Europe, summer is the ideal time to book, since spring break is high demand and those March/April trips fill up fast.

If you need to book something last-minute for the current year, fall break can still be booked in the summer. Many places across the country don't observe fall break, so demand is lower. October is also peak hurricane season, so Caribbean pricing tends to be lower due to the possibility of volatile weather.

When should I book my winter or snowbird getaway?

If it's September or October and you haven't already booked your snowbird getaway for mid-January through March, now is the time. Pricing can be higher at all-inclusives in Mexico and the Caribbean during their peak season from January through March, but the weather is ideal. If you haven't booked spring break yet, it might already be too late.

Want to get ahead of the curve? It's not too early to start planning summer travel for the following year, either. You can typically book anything with an air package about 11 months out, so in September and October, right after summer break ends, start thinking about summer break for the following year.

When should I book my Christmas or holiday vacation?

If it's November or December, you're likely spending a lot of time with family for Thanksgiving and Christmas, which makes this an ideal time to plan extended family vacations for the following year.

This is also the best window to capitalize on the lowest pricing for fall break, since you're 11 months out. January is one of the busiest booking seasons for travel agents, so getting ahead of the curve in November and December means faster, more attentive service from your travel advisor.

What's the best month to book travel overall?

January is peak time to book any type of travel for that calendar year. For example, January 2023 was the best month to book any 2023 travel. You can still book last-minute spring break in January, though expect higher prices and less availability. It's also a great time for summer and fall bookings.

To be direct: January is about the only ideal time to book travel for the following December. The most expensive time to travel, hands down, is Christmas break. From mid-December through early January, you'll see the highest prices and highest demand at nearly every destination, warm or cold. You need to book your Christmas vacation almost a year in advance, since most airlines (aside from Southwest) release their flight schedules about 11 months out.

Can I book a vacation more than a year in advance?

Yes, for select trip types. While it isn't always possible, a few vacation types can be booked more than 11 months out: all-inclusive resorts without airfare (which you can add later, possibly with points or Southwest), ocean cruises, river cruises, and group tours. Group tours in particular are structured in a way that allows for much earlier booking.

What is Wave Season, and when does it happen?

If it's February or March, you're in what the travel industry calls Wave Season, the busiest booking season of the year. There are some excellent sales during this window for summer and fall vacations. Because it's the busiest time of year for bookings, working with your travel advisor early in Wave Season means faster service and better availability.

What if I need to book a last-minute summer vacation?

If you're a last-minute traveler, or your work schedule forces you to wait, April and May are truly your final windows to lock in a summer trip. One option worth knowing about: charter flights, which are exclusive flights accessible through travel advisors.

Charter flights are nonstop, run on a very limited schedule, and depart from a limited number of cities. Nashville and Cincinnati both have charter schedules in this region. Most charters run 6 or 7 nights, either Saturday to Saturday or Sunday to Saturday, with no flexibility on the schedule. Charter seasons typically run from late May through early August, with some flights out of CVG running year-round.

These flights tend to serve popular destinations like Cancun, Punta Cana, Jamaica, and Los Cabos, and can sometimes offer last-minute deals as resorts look to fill capacity for the summer. Keep in mind that charter flights often charge extra for checked baggage and seat selection, but they're still typically much cheaper than flying published air. April and May are truly your last chance to grab a summer vacation.

Are last-minute travel deals real?

No, the last-minute travel deal is a myth. It doesn't exist. If you do find something last-minute that seems very cheap, be cautious. You could be booking a flight or hotel that's already oversold, and the first passengers to be bumped are usually those who booked last and paid the least.

Don't get caught in that situation. Always book with a trusted travel advisor, because advisors book with trusted suppliers.
